British spies say Wuhan lab leak ‘doable’
TThe Vaccines Minister has insisted the World Health Organization must be able to fully investigate the origins of the pandemic, following reports that UK officials believe it is “doable” that the coronavirus appeared after a laboratory leak.
Speaking to Sky News, Nadhim Zahawi said it was vital that the WHO be “allowed to conduct its investigation without a hitch” as it seeks to better understand how the initial outbreak began, adding that “we we must not neglect anything “.
There has been renewed interest in how the pandemic started this week, after President Joe Biden asked U.S. intelligence agencies to reexamine the origins and report back in 90 days. Facebook has also said it will no longer ban posts claiming Covid-19 is human-made.
According to a Sunday Times report, Western intelligence services – including Britain – initially considered there was only a “remote” chance of a leak from the Wuhan Institute of Virology, where research is being carried out on coronaviruses derived from bats.
But there has been a reassessment since, and a lab breakout is considered “doable,” sources have revealed.
Yet amid mounting tensions between China and the West, WHO’s emergency director Dr Mike Ryan warned on Friday that efforts to better understand how the virus came about are “poisoned by politics” .
“We would like everyone to separate, if they can, politics from this issue of science,” he said at a press conference.
